The Kalamazoo Curling Club is open to anyone that might enjoy the fun and competitive (yet cordial!) sport of curling. A one-year membership is just $100! Additional members of your household may become members for just $50.

Curling Member Benefits

When you become a member of the Kalamazoo Curling Club, you get the following benefits:

• Membership in the U.S. Curling Association. (one member per household – this means only one copy of the USCA newsletter, and additional fees may be required if additional member participates in regional playdowns.)

This year’s Annual Olive Branch Charity Bonspiel will be held November 18^th.  

Organized by Ingrid Beck, long-time KCC member, this event supports The Olive Branch For Children www.theolivebranchforchildren.org

The locally funded Canadian charity group founded by Deborah McCracken-Nangereke, works in the remote areas of Tanzania and focuses on the prevention and care of HIV/AIDS, early childhood education, food security and vulnerable women and children.  This “curling for a cause” spiel includes a 9am or 11am draw, two 6-end jitney style games, lunch and prizes.

Up Your Game

Need a refresher or to improve your delivery or weight management?  We have OCA/OCC trained coaches to improve your game. The cost is $50.00 per sheet, per hour, with a maximum of four people. You can book a private lesson or share with two to three other players. Last season, four players paid $100 each ($400) and arranged for eight 1 hour weekly sessions. We have ice available on Sundays from 1:00pm. – 2:00pm, Sundays 2pm to 3pm and Thursdays 7pm to 8pm. If this is not convenient, let us know and we will try to accommodate you according to ice availability.  REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN - click the links under Upcoming Events.

Karl Davis Presented With The King Curling Club Paul Olsen Outstanding Contribution Award

On Oct 17, 2022 Karl Davis, founding member and Past President of the Club, was presented with the Club's Outstanding Contribution Award.  Presenter David Barber said "I can't think of anyone more deserving of this award".  The award is named in memory of Paul Olsen who was himself a founding member and long-time supporter of the King Curling Club.  read more

2023 Wheelchair Doubles Provincial Championship – November 10-12, 2023

Following on the heels of the successful Wheelchair Provincial Championship that was held earlier this year, the King Curling Club (KCC) is pleased to host 6 teams from across Ontario to compete in the 2023 Wheelchair Doubles Provincial Championship. Wheelchair curling is played with the same rocks and on the same ice as regular curling; the rocks are thrown from a stationary wheelchair and there is no sweeping. If you are a curler, you will appreciate the accuracy and finesse of these talented athletes. KCC members and non-members are welcome to watch the games:

Fellow KCC member Karel Span was recently recognized by the Southlake Regional Health Centre, in a recent press release, for his long standing participation in the 'Run for Southlake' fundraising event. This same news article is reproduced below;

Press Release 

King Man Celebrates 9 Years of Running for Southlake
78-year old Karel Span knows too well the importance of critical health care close to home, and has been fundraising for it for nearly a decade. 

Schomberg, ON – 45 minutes – that’s 78-year old Karel Span’s goal for completing the five kilometer Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake this year. “Last year I did it in 43 minutes but I’m 78 so I feel like this is a good goal,” said Span.

For nearly a decade, Span has participated and fundraised for a cause close to his heart - Southlake Regional Health Centre – via the Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake. As Team Captain of the ‘King Curling Club’ run team, Karel has raised over $10,000 for the hospital over the course of his participation, last year raising $3,680.

“Both my wife and I have received incredible care at Southlake, primarily within the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre as both of us have been touched by the disease. The way physicians, nurses and staff treat patients here is exceptional.  Even during the hard times of COVID, they still worked so hard to be compassionate and make people like us feel comfortable”. 

As a resident of Schomberg, Karel has rallied his network to support the event.  “The members of the King Curling Club are helping to drive pledges online, and we have pledge forms and posters all around the club.  I also speak to residents in my condo building about it and many of them have stepped-up to support me and the team”. 

According to Southlake Foundation President and CEO Jennifer Ritter, Span’s story is exactly what the Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake is all about. “This is our largest annual community-based fundraiser at Southlake - the key word being community. Each year, we see champions like Karel advocate for Southlake and activate their personal networks to fundraise for the critical equipment needs across our hospital and we are so grateful.  When our community rallies around Southlake, the results are inspiring and nothing short of incredible.”  

As spring weather finally starts to emerge, Ritter is hoping to see the community support the event in historical numbers.  “Last year, we had over 800 participants run, walk or participate in their own way, on their own time. I hope our family, friends and neighbours will join Karel this year, so we can see registrations return to pre-COVID, with over 1500 participants coming together in support of their hospital and community!”

The 2023 Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake takes place on Sunday, April 30, 2023.  Participants are asked to fundraise a minimum of $100 for this year’s event.  Registration fees cover event costs, so that 100% of participants’ fundraising dollars can be directed towards the critical needs of the hospital.

The Strathcona Cup that was recently held at KCC on Saturday, January 21, was truly a spectacular success, and a 'pure dead brilliant' event!  An outstanding job performed by all; organizers, volunteers, Bob's ice crew, and curlers alike. Special mentions go to Mark Inglis for getting us involved and leading the way, from beginning to end; Larry Sheardown for putting together a mighty volunteer crew; Christine Warner for handling the logistics of the day flawlessly; and Gino DiFebo for lovingly preparing a delicious main feature for lunch - beef brisket -  a 'well tidy scran'!

Registration for the 2022/23 Season has commenced for all returning members and new members alike. Registration began on Monday August 15 and will remain open for 3 weeks until Sunday September 4, 2022.  

Please be advised that KCC will be observing Governemnt guidelines and health measures with respect to COVID. Accordingly masks will not be required as we begin the new season. Please refer to 'COVID Protocols' under the Club info tab for further details.

Registration for the 2022/23 Season will be commencing shortly for all returning members and new members alike. Registration will begin on Monday August 15 and remain open for 3 weeks until Sunday September 4, 2022.

The echoes of the hurry hard will once again embark on the sheets of King Curling starting September 27. 

As the curling brooms are beginning to make their way out of the closet, curlers are counting down to the start of the 2021-22 curling season. WarmUP Week, September 27-October 1, opens the Club’s season and the excitement is in high gear with events already filling up.  Note that all events are for registered members only with the exception of Curling 101 which is open to the public.  If you are not already registered do so right away and join the excitement.  All participants are required to be fully vaccinated.

WarmUP Week will give you the opportunity to hone your skills on free practice ice and to join instructional classes. Curling 101 returns for those who have never tried curling and would like to, and for those with only 2 years curling experience or less.  Curling 102 is provided for curlers returning to action who want to polish off the rust, and revisit game strategies. New for this season’s opening week is instruction in Stick Curling. This October 1 morning course will introduce techniques and rules that apply to players using a stick to deliver rocks.  Youth are invited to come on Thursday September 30, 4-6pm and bring a friend. All of our introductory courses will include changes to the curling game and lounge rules that have been affected by Covid-19 protocols.

King Curling Club offers something for everyone; from ages 7 to 90, and from beginner to experienced. Due to very poor weather conditions for travel, league play for tonight, Tuesday Mar. 1st is cancelled.  In addition to this notice an email has been sent to the teams involved.  Leagues will be arranging for makeup games were necessary.  

Once again this event in being run by KCC Club member Ingrid Beck.  This Spiel is in support of remote communities in Tanzania.  Individual entries will be organized into teams for an enjoyable day of curling including lunch, snacks and prizes.  Come out for a fun day supporting a tremendous charity. Curling Club members, John Hackner, Doug Groombridge, Bob Belcher, Wilf Robinson and Dave Swackhammer represented the King Curling Club recently at the Zone 9 Playdowns for the 2013 Dominion Curling Club Men’s Championships.  The team earned the honour to represent their club by winning the club championships last year.

League Structure and Registration Updates for the 2013-2014 Season

Leagues

Here are a few updates as a follow-up to our recent presentation to the membership regarding league structure and format for the coming season. The changes are based on feedback from both the members and the board:

 1) Friday Mixed Social League will remain unchanged for next season as the "Mixed Pairs" format for Friday nights was not well received. Couples who would like to curl together on one team as a mixed pair (one female curler/one male curler) will be accommodated when requested.

 2) A New Sunday Mixed Recreational League will be offered on Sunday mornings from 10:00 a.m. – 12 noon. The format will be the same as the Tuesday/Thursday Mixed Recreational Leagues as a ‘tag-draw’, with teams made up on the day of the game. This league will be dependent upon interest with a minimum registration of curlers required.

3) To accommodate league growth both now and in the future, King Curling Club will reserve the right to institute byes for all leagues to support an increase in membership. This is a very common arrangement in most established curling clubs. As conveyed previously, the mixed team entry league on Thursday will have a limit of 18 teams. This means there would be 2 or 3 nights off for the season. Similarly on Mondays the men’s team entry league will need to spill over to Tuesday for 4 – 6 games per year depending on the number of teams registered.

 Membership Fees

 The board has decided that we will maintain the current fee structure for the coming season. Thanks to our strong volunteer base we have been able to keep our costs in line with revenues and have provided the following incentives for early registration and payment:

 A 5% discount will be offered to members who make full payment by July 31st. Otherwise, full payment of fees must be received by the club by September 1, 2013.

 Registration Changes & Deadlines

 Curling club management software has recently been purchased to better serve the membership with on-line, up to date information. The program features include an on-line registration process. We hope to have this ready and be open for registrations by March 15, 2013. This is a tentative date only. All current members will be given access to register themselves and get confirmation of their registration using the software. Members without an email address or access to a computer will need to register at the club and a day will be announced for this.

 Placement in leagues is on a first come basis. To maintain your membership in current leagues, registration accompanied by full payment or a minimum $100 non-refundable deposit must be received by April 13, 2013.

Sorry - we are full!

• It takes about 1000 hours of volunteerism to run the KCC bar for the season.
• We have over 60 youth curling members.
• It only takes an unpadded knee or hand only 3 seconds to damage the ice and it take 30 minutes to repair the damage.
• Our ice rental fees cover the cost of the 5 Township staff who are directly involved in some way with the maintenance of the curling facility. 100% of the other work needed to keep the Club vital and functioning is performed by volunteers.
• On average adult curling rocks weight 44 lbs.
• We have a full set of 34 junior rocks that weigh 20 lbs each and are used in our Little Rocks programme for children ages 6 to 12
• The junior rocks stored in cabinets on the side boards can not be placed directly on the ice or they will melt the ice.  The must be properly cooled for about 1 hour on plastic mats on the ice before they can be used.
• Our 4 ice sponsors donated $3000 each towards the cost of our full ice installation application that will save the Township $2500 per year in the cost of paint and materials for the next 5 to 7 years. There also is a cost saving to the environment by eliminating the dumping of used paint at the end of each year.
• We have over 20 members coaching in various capacities.
• Even if you only curl once a week you should replace your broom head insert and your grippers every year.
• Last year the KCC booked 98% of the ice time rented.
• We have two extra rocks of each size in case a rock should be become damaged and not useable.
